What “supervised” means
These are the SAE levels of driving automation (J3016) that NHTSA uses. Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is Level 2 — Additional Driver Assistance. You are still the driver.

Momentary Driver Assistance
You drive, you monitor. The system can warn you or step in briefly (alerts, emergency interventions).

Driver Assistance
You drive, you monitor. Continuous assistance with either acceleration/braking OR steering.

Level 2
Additional Driver Assistance
You drive, you monitor. Continuous assistance with both acceleration/braking AND steering. Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is this level.

Level 3
Conditional Automation
System drives; you must be available to take over upon request. Tesla FSD Supervised is not this.

Level 4
High Automation
When engaged, system drives within limited service areas; you ride. Not available for consumer purchase today.

Full Automation
When engaged, system drives under all conditions; you ride. Not available for consumer purchase today.
Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is SAE Level 2 — hands ready, eyes up, you are responsible.
